Do you love chocolate? Wish you had it more than once a day? And not just for dessert? Well there’s a place where chocolate is incorporated in just about everything, and that place is called Max Brenner. A chocolate paradise where chocolate dreams come true. Chocolate allergens beware: just stepping inside the restaurant may be disastrous to your health.
I visited the chocolate paradise at the Union Square location and it was amazing. From the exterior, in giant white chocolate letters, you already know you are about to enter a magical place. Reminds you of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. If you wish to read on how this chocolate haven came to be, click here.
There are two entrances, one on the far left and the other on the far right. Whichever side you enter, you step into Max Brenner’s chocolate shop. You can buy from a variety of chocolates and kitchen accessories.
There are even machines where you see giant mixers mixing chocolate.
I went on a Saturday night, so a crowd had already formed, but luckily we had reservations (and by “we” I mean my cousins and I). The wait was approximately 10-15 minutes. Not too bad, since I kept busy by taking pictures and regressing to that child wonder when everything seems magical.
Max Brenner is not only a store slash restaurant but also a “chocolate bar” as well. Perfect for those that do not wish to deal with the table and waiter scene.
This is a chocolate pizza! Can you believe it!?
The restaurant has two floors for dining, and we were seated on the first floor.
I’m a planner, so days before I went through the food menu and decided what I was going to eat.
The wait staff is very friendly and not intrusive. I ordered the Brenner Burger.
After that delicious meal, it was time for the main course, dessert. For this, I did not have my mind made up beforehand. I spent about 5-10 minutes going back and forth through the dessert menu, trying to the decide from all the amazing options. As a group, we decided on the Classic European Fondue for Two.
It says it’s for two, but it was enough for the three of us. The platter included: bananas, strawberries, chocolate chunk cookies, marshmallows and fluy chocolate sponge cake. For dip you get two chocolate towers in which you choose from dark, milk or white chocolate. We chose milk and dark. The third “tower” is a toffee flavored chocolate sauce. Last but not least, you get an adorable mini grill which is lit up in front of you. The waiter puts a fiery red stone in the cup and then lights it up with a lighter, and BAM! you have a beautiful fire. The cover is put on top and you can immediately start roasting your marshmallows away, or cookies like I did.
Being bold I ordered a dessert just for me. From the delicious chocolate options, I chose the Peanut Butter Turtle Choctail which comes in the Alice Cup. Essentially it is a glorified milkshake made of: dark chocolate ganache, peanut butter, caramel and whipped cream. I personally do not like whipped cream, so my drink had no white fluff.
I regret the milkshake, not because it was bad, but it was an overkill to my stomach. So much so, that I felt that I had to unbutton my pants so it would not pop from the expansion of my stomach.
Prices are not on the budget friendly side, but it’s not ridicously expensive either. I left buying an Alice “Drink Me” milkshake cup and an overly full stomach. Would come back again but with the mindset that less is more.
> Don’t get a panini, not worth the price you pay for.
> The mac and cheese is cheese heaven!
> Milkshakes are not great but not bad; just ok.
